Visiting Engela District Hospital: a practical guide for families
Engela District Hospital is the region’s main public hospital, serving Ohangwena and many patients from across the Angolan border. When treatment takes days rather than hours, the hardest question for a family is often the simplest one: where do we sleep?
The reality of a hospital stay
Wards have visiting hours; corridors have hard benches; and driving home between visits can mean hours on the road each day. Families end up exhausted right when someone needs them strongest. Having a base a few minutes from the gate changes the whole rhythm: visit in the morning, rest at midday, return in the afternoon, sleep properly at night.
Staying nearby
- Fudapo Guesthouse is ±5 km from Engela Hospital, about 8 minutes, on the B1 at Omafo.
- Rooms are quiet and private: your own entrance and key, en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, blackout curtains in Sossusvlei for night-shift sleepers.
- The shared kitchen matters more than people expect. Cook proper food for the patient and yourselves instead of living on takeaways, and store medicine or milk in the fridge.
- Our live-in housekeeper is home 24 hours, so late returns from the ward are never a problem.
- Staying a week or more? The weekly rate applies automatically, and we can quote for longer.
Small things that help
Bring the patient’s health passport and ID for every visit; keep small change for transport; label any food you leave in the ward fridge; and put one family member in charge of updates so the phone doesn’t run the visit. If relatives abroad are helping with costs, they can book and pay for the room online from anywhere.
Private rooms with your own entrance, en-suite bathroom and AC, from N$300 a night, with a 24-hour housekeeper at the gate. Book online, pay by EFT or PayToday.
